On The Map

On the street that is synonymous with sartorial splendour this Tuesday.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson chose Savile Row to launch London: The Home of Menswear History and Heritage map as a part of London Collections: Men. The map is based on Keren Protheroes’s all revealing London: Home of Menswear History and Heritage study, which was commissioned by the British Fashion Council and Victoria and Albert Museum.

The map charts the major developments in men’s fashion over the last 300 years - including the three-piece suit, Wellington boots, brogues and bondage trousers - and, naturally, Savile Row and its environs feature prominently throughout.

Copies of the map can be downloaded at Visit London.

"London is to the suit, as Parma is to the Parmesan cheese. And when the big cheeses of the world want to get themselves properly attired, they come to our great city," was the Mayor’s ringing message.
