Savile Row Celebrates 15 Years Of The Campaign For Wool

Where would Savile Row be without wool? For the bespoke tailors of our street, wool is the fibre upon which their work largely depends - it drapes beautifully, breathes naturally, and adapts effortlessly. Without it, the art of tailoring as practised on the Row would be an entirely different proposition.

So, this October, the Savile Row Bespoke Association (SRBA) and its members are proud to celebrate the 15th anniversary of The Campaign for Wool with window displays (pictured) and a number of special launches highlighting the enduring connection between Savile Row and the world’s most important natural fibre. One such highlight of this year’s Wool Month celebrations is SRBA member Henry Poole’s reintroduction of The Lonsdale Check, a faithful recreation of a tweed originally commissioned by the 5th Earl of Lonsdale, which has been woven once again by Yorkshire mill Standeven Fabrics.

Founded in 2010 by His Majesty King Charles III, when he was HRH The Prince of Wales, The Campaign for Wool was created to champion the natural, renewable and biodegradable qualities of wool. The global initiative began in October 2010 with a launch event that famously saw Savile Row grassed over and transformed into a pasture for grazing sheep. Fifteen years on, the Campaign’s message is more relevant than ever - and nowhere is it more vividly expressed than on Savile Row.

Peter Ackroyd, Chairman of The Campaign for Wool, comments: “Savile Row has been a central part of the Campaign for Wool since its inception in 2010, when it was transformed into a pasture where 50 sheep grazed. The Campaign returned to Savile Row again in 2015 when tailors partnered with leading UK and Italian wool mills during Wool Week (now known as Wool Month) to create a variety of beautiful, finely tailored and outerwear garments and accessories. Tailors, both established and emerging, continue to champion the use of Merino and British wool fabrics every day, with their bespoke creations being sent all around the UK and beyond. We are thrilled to partner with them once more in celebration of our 15th anniversary, which will feature exciting window displays, limited edition wool garments, and pop-up retail events that showcase wool as a sustainable fibre for the future.”

Wool Month runs on Savile Row until 31st October.
