Richard Anderson Celebrates 25 Years

It was Bryan Ferry, long-time client and a man who certainly knows a thing or two about good suits, who perhaps best summed up Richard Anderson: “the traditions of Savile Row with a modern twist”.

This ability to combine the disciplines of the best bespoke tailoring with a fresh sensibility has served the Savile Row Bespoke Association member well, and we pass on our warmest congratulations as the house celebrates both its 25th anniversary and 25 years as a valued part of our community.

When Master Cutter Richard Anderson, together with fellow former Huntsman man Brian Lishak (pictured, top), set up his eponymous shop at 13 Savile Row in 2001, it was the first purely bespoke tailoring house to open on our celebrated street in 50 years.

Much of the approach that Bryan Ferry immediately identified stems from Richard’s formative years at Huntsman, where he trained under the legendary Head Cutter Colin Hammick. As he worked on garments for clients including Stewart Granger, Rex Harrison and Katharine Hepburn, Hammick instilled in him an uncompromising pursuit of perfection, famously insisting that every measurement be taken to within a sixteenth of an inch.

Those foundations and a single-button fastening continue to inform the Richard Anderson house style, which utilises the nineteenth-century Thornton system of cutting. Characterised by long, clean lines, it features a neat, structured shoulder without rope to the sleeve head and slightly higher, all-elongating pockets and vents.

The house also sustains one of the Row’s most enduring and important traditions: the passing on of knowledge, skills and values from one generation to the next. Richard’s daughter Molly Anderson (pictured, second, with Richard) now works alongside him in the business, helping to build a lasting family legacy and ensuring that the experience and expertise developed over the past 25 years will continue into the future.

To mark its silver anniversary, Richard Anderson has collaborated with the specialist British mills Stephen Walters, Woven in the Bone, and William Halstead to develop six cloths that are currently available for bespoke commissions.

Reflecting on the last 25 years. Richard commented: "When Brian and I opened the doors to Richard Anderson, the ambition was simple: to create a tailoring house that respected the traditions of Savile Row while making them accessible to a new generation of clients.

"Reaching this milestone is something I am immensely proud of, not because of the years themselves, but because of the relationships we've built along the way.

"The craft remains at the heart of everything we do. Every garment is still cut by hand, and every commission represents the trust a client places in us. While the business has evolved to include ready-to-wear and new initiatives such as RICH's, the principles have never changed: quality, service and a commitment to making exceptional clothes.

“This anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on what we've achieved, but it's also about looking forward. Seeing the next generation become involved in the business gives me great confidence that the values and skills that define Savile Row will continue to thrive for many years to come."
