Wool Month

Wool Month is in full swing, and nowhere is it more visible than on Savile Row. Windows up and down our street have been dressed to reflect the Campaign for Wool’s “Check It’s Wool” message. And a veritable flock of familiar Wool Month model sheep can be spotted among displays that make the case for low-carbon British mills, wool’s natural temperature regulation properties, and a sustainable circular manufacturing model.

Among the Savile Row Bespoke Association (SRBA) members taking part in wool Month, Huntsman is showing a bespoke jacket made for British Rewoven, a project run with the Campaign for Wool and Standeven Fabrics. The cloth is woven from 50% virgin British wool and 50% recycled waste from the Row’s cutting rooms. Dege & Skinner has developed new wool shirt fabrics in its workshop at No. 10 Savile Row. And Gieves & Hawkes has a dedicated wool window, featuring an array of British wool garments and accessories.

Wool Month is organised by the Campaign for Wool, a not-for-profit international organisation. His Majesty King Charles III conceived the campaign in 2008, when he was HRH The Prince of Wales, and he remains its Patron. Launched in 2010, it works to raise awareness of the unique and sustainable properties of wool as a natural fibre and to promote its many uses across fashion, interiors and other areas of everyday life. It also supports farmers and woolgrowers across the Commonwealth, whose leading wool-growing nations are Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and, of course, the United Kingdom. There is a growing focus on traceability, responsible land management, animal welfare, recycling and circularity.

This year’s Wool Month also comes as the Campaign for Wool welcomes a new Chairman; our congratulations go to Ian Maclean MBE, Chairman of the celebrated knitwear company John Smedley, on his appointment. We also send our condolences to the family and colleagues of his predecessor, Peter Ackroyd MBE, who passed away unexpectedly in July.
